Mao had a bunch (apparently 30km) of tunnels dug by hand all around Beijing. Many of them to the famous sites so he could make speeches and such without appearing above ground. They were also bomb shelters. I thought walking around in them was pretty cool. They have English speaking guides and a dearth of tourists (even in Golden Week).
